Former Lavonia, Toccoa champ dies
Wesley English, a multitime Late Model champion at Georgia’s Toccoa Raceway and Lavonia Speedway, died Tuesday after a 23-month battle with cancer. The Clayton, Ga., resident, slated to join Lavonia’s Hall of Fame this year, was 68.
A five-time winner on the Southeastern Late Model Sportsman Series, English was also a champion at Westminster (S.C.) Speedway. His final track championship came in the Limited Late Model division at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, N.C., in 2017.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Tracy Southards English, five children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Surviving brother Doug English was also a Late Model competitor. Visitation is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, April 18, at Beck Funeral Home in Clayton followed by a 1:15 p.m. funeral. Burial will follow at Persimmon Community Cemetery.
