Tyler Bruening lowers the track record at Golden Isles Speedway.
What won the race: Regaining the lead from Daulton Wilson on the 42nd lap, polesitter Tyler Bruening of Decorah, Iowa, led the rest of Friday's 50-lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series opener at Golden Isles Speedway for his first career national touring victory. Bruening, who led the first six laps, earned $12,000 in taking the checkers 1.134 seconds ahead of late-charging Jonathan Davenport.
Quotable: "Those guys got by me there and I just had to commit and go after it," Bruening said. "I had a hot rod all night. Everything tonight was a first for me. Track record? Hell, I've never done that. I won the heat against some of the best in the business. And I drove my ass off in that feature, man. I wanted it so bad."
Key notes: Bruening, who slipped back to third mid-race, was tearful climbing from his car in victory lane. ... Bruening plans to follow the World of Outlaws Late Model Series in 2025. ... Drake Troutman, listed 13th, was dropped three spots for jumping the final restart. ... Four cautions slowed the action, the first on the seventh lap for Donald McIntosh's flat tire. ... A lap-13 caution flew when third-running Ryan Gustin got into the backstretch wall and retired. ... The third yellow flag appeared on lap 20 for a McIntosh spin. ... Ross Robinson spun on lap 46 for the final stoppage. ... Cody Overton was forced to the tail at the feature's start because he arrived in staging with a disallowed tire compound. ... Bruening's 14.687-second qualifying lap lowered Kyle Larson's 14.856-second track record set in 2022. ... Montana driver Michael Leach started his first Lucas Oil feature. He spun late just in front of second-running Daulton Wilson. ... Boom Briggs lost a left-rear wheel in time trials (he scratched for the night with rear-end issues). ... Bruening's teammate Mike Marlar, a Golden Isles winner last season and expected Lucas Oil regular in 2025, was a no-show for the season opener.
On the move: Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., started 23rd and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Bruening's Skyline Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Truck Country, American Racing Custom Wheels, Quick Supply, Olsen Explosives, Breuning Rock Products, Brown's Heavy Equipment and Can-Am Auto Salvage.
Points chase: After Golden Isles Friday: 1. Tyler Bruening (260); 2. Jonathan Davenport (230). 3. Brandon Overton (220); 4. Devin Moran (210); 5. Brian Shirley (205); 6. Jimmy Owens (200); 7. Brandon Sheppard (195); 8. Max Blair (190); 9. Garrett Alberson (185); 10. Daulton Wilson (180).
