Nick Hoffman (9) spun after Ryan Gustin (19r) regained the lead.
What won the race: Winning a mid-race duel of front-row starters, Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, took the lead for the second time from Nick Hoffman on the 18th lap and cruised the rest of Friday's 35-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series opener at Volusia Speedway Park. Surviving an overheating engine in the final laps, Gustin earned $12,000 in the Sunshine Nationals opener while Hoffman spun out of contention in turn one just after Gustin took command.
Quotable: "We unloaded there at Golden Isles (the previous Friday) and I felt like we had one of the fastest cars in the country. The driver just messed up, hit the fence, so I knew I had to get it done tonight to redeem myself," Gustin said. "We was obviously running hot. (Car owner) Todd (Cooney) was standing out there on the backchute, I was pointing at (the engine) and he said keep going. So we burned her down and it paid off."
Key notes: Gustin notched his 11th career WoO victory. ... Eight cautions slowed the 35-lapper, including the lap-18 spin for Nick Hoffman, who led 16 of the first 17 laps. ... The most serious caution came on the second attempted start when Max Blair went around exiting turn two, triggering a six-car pileup including first-time WoO starters Michael Leach and Dan Ebert. ... Tyler Erb slowed on lap 23 and Tristan Chamberlain on lap 30. ... Dillon McCowan lost a driveshafter on a lap-18 restart. ... Dustin Sorensen spun exiting turn four on lap 10. ... A lap-nine caution appeared for a slowing Austin Smith. ... The first yellow flew on the initial start for Daniel Hilsabeck's smoking car. ... Hudson O'Neal transferred through a consy but engine problems forced him to scratch from the feature. ... Ricky Thornton Jr. was in the middle of a three-car pileup starting the second consy. ... Fuel pump issues plagued Derrick Stewart in prelims. ... Jake Timm went to a backup car after ignition issues in his primary entry. ... The Sunshine Nationals concludes with Saturday's 50-lap, $20,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., started 23rd and finished third; Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., started 17th and finished fifth.

Heat race recap

Ryan Gustin fired off from the pole and led all eight laps to win the first heat race by 4.755 seconds over second-starting Daniel Hilsabeck, who held off off multiple challenges from Drake Troutman for the runner-up spot, The race’s lone caution came on lap four when Ashton Winger slowed from sixth and required a tow back to the pits after apparent engine failure. … Pole-starting Bobby Pierce dominated the second heat, leading all eight laps and winning by 1.796 seconds over Max Blair. Fourth-starting Dan Ebert held off Hudson O’Neal near the race’s midway point, with Ebert grabbing the third transfer spot. Derrick Stewart broke a fuel pump on the final lap. … Second-starting Jonathan Davenport cruised to a flag-to-flag victory in heat three, beating polesitter Brian Shirley to the line by 0.859 of a second. Fourth-starting Tim McCreadie was third. … Third-starting Ethan Dotson overcame multiple cautions to win the fourth heat by 0.714 of a second over fifth-starting Brandon Sheppard. Tyler Erb rallied to finish third, punching his ticket into Friday’s $12,000-to-win season opener. The race’s first caution came on the opening start when Dustin Walker had a solo spin on the frontstretch. The second yellow came on the ensuing restart when Erb was docked a row for jumping the start. The third stoppage came on lap two when Austin Smith hopped the turn-three cushion and came to a stop; he spun again on lap six, drawing the fourth slowdown. Erb and Daulton Wilson then tangled on the lap-six restart while battling for second, with both coming to stop in the heavy turn-two cushion after Wilson’s right-front tire became lodged in Erb’s left-rear quarterpanel. It took track officials several minutes to separate both cars, with Wilson continuing to place eighth. … Brandon Overton took off from the second-starting spot and led all eight laps, winning heat five by 2.450 seconds over pole-starting Carson Ferguson. Fourth-starting Cade Dillard overtook Devin Moran on the opening start and finished third. … Nick Hoffman overcame a couple of late-race incidents to win the sixth and final heat race by 0.994 of a second over pole-starting Dustin Sorensen. Fifth-starting Brenden Smith was third. The race’s first caution came on the final lap when third-running Kyle Bronson slowed with heavy right-front nose damage after piling into the turn-three cushion. The second incident drew a brief red flag when Frank Heckenast Jr. spun from second on the ensuing restart, collecting Tanner English; the retiring drivers weren't injured.
