Mike Stearns celebrates his richest dirt racing victory.
What won the race: Surviving a lap-three scrape that sent his car around, hometown Late Model rookie Mike Stearns was restored to the lead and officially led 35 laps for a $5,000 Brown County Speedway victory, his first on the Repairable Vehicles.com Tri-State Series. The pole-starting Stearns survived a flurry of challenges on the final restart and took the checkers ahead of fifth-starting Kent Arment and Cole Searing in a race run with a light mist falling throughout the Dacotah Rumble finale.
Quotable: "Thanks to my crew. They kind of busted their butts today fixing stuff that I wrecked last night, so I guess it's all worth it," Stearns said. "I don't know what happened on the back straightaway there when I got turned, but with the Tri-State rules, you got to keep moving, so I just held her to the floor. Unfortunately I collected Becker, so I feel bad for them, but I had to do what I had to do."
Key notes: Stearns, who entered the season winless, scored his fourth overall victory of the season and richest win of his career. ... He swept a pair of Late Model features the previous weekend at Miller Central Speedway and won May 30 at Brown County (he also has five modified victories). ... Four cautions slowed the 35-lapper, the most significant on the lap-three restart when Stearns spun in turn three while battling Jayson Good and collected Chad Becker in trying to keep rolling (both were restored to their positions but Becker had a flat left-front tire). Becker won Friday's $2,500 weekend opener at his home track. ... In other yellows, Mike Rohwedder's early spin drew the first caution. ... A lap-20 caution appeared when a tire barrier was knocked onto the racing surface. ... The final caution fell on the 31st lap when Konner Sperle spun entering turn three and collected Charlie Olsen. .. Thomas Weisgram was running fifth when he got too high on lap 22 and fell outside the top 10. ... Scott Ward's race ended when he pitted outside the designated pitting area on the first caution. ... Double heat-race passing points set the consolation and feature lineups.
On the move: Jeffrey Larson of Reading, Minn., started 15th and finished seventh.
