Trey Mills waves the checkers at Talladega Short Track.
What won the race: Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., overcame a rash of early restarts to lead all 25 laps in winning Saturday night's first Alfred Gurley Memorial feature at Talladega Short Track. Mills beat Dillard Hatchett to the line by 1.244 seconds for a $2,525 payday and his first career Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series victory on the fledgling tour.
Quotable: “We still got another feature to go. It was pretty treacherous right there on the top of (turns) one and two, I was overdriving it at the beginning and kinda slowed down,” Mills said. “There was oil down on the track getting into one and I about hit the fence. I thought something broke for a second, but they said oil was on the track, so a little sigh of relief there, but the car was really good.”
Key notes: Mills scored his first victory in a month after topping June 26's Herald & Review 100 at Macon (Ill.) Speedway, worth $7,500 on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. ... Mills drew a 'zero pill' in victory lane before leading all 25 laps from the pole to sweep both features. Dillard Hatchett moved into second on a lap-eight restart and trailed Mills the rest of the way, but never truly challenged for the lead. ... Cruz Skinner took fourth from Oliver Gentry on lap 11, leaving Gentry to settle for fifth. ... Seventh-running Brandon Brown retired on lap eight with heavy right-front nose damage and was credited with 18th. ... The event honored Alfred Gurley, former co-owner of Talladega Short Track who was responsible for its initial construction and continued maintenance. Gurley competed for a brief period of time using No. 25. ... The first 25-lapper was slowed by five cautions and lasted 17 minutes, with 14 starters completing the distance. ... The 20-car field used its exact finishing order to lineup for the night's second feature.
On the move: Tom Maddox of Forney, Ala., started 17th and finished 10th.
