Trey Mills heads to twin victories at Talladega Short Track.
What won the race: After leading every lap in the first feature of the night, Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., completed the clean sweep of Saturday's twin-feature Alfred Gurley Memorial program on the Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series at Talladega Short Track. The 17-year-old led all 25 laps for the $2,525 victory, topping Dillard Hatchett by 0.689 seconds at the finish.
Quotable: "The car was really good all night. ... The track kind of maneuvered around the bottom for that second feature, so just had to get my car working right around that bottom," Mills said in victory lane. "I was a little bit too tight right there, but managed to hold on and get the job done."
Key notes: It’s Mills’s third overall Super Late Model victory of the season, in addition to his June 26’s Herald & Review 100 victory at Macon (Ill.) Speedway and fourth overall of his young career. ... Mills became the eighth winner through the first-year tour's opening nine events, then joined Joseph Joiner as the only other driver with multiple victories. ... Dillard Hatchett and Lucas Burns completed the podium in both main events. ... The event honored Gurley, former co-owner of Talladega Short Track who was responsible for its initial construction and continued maintenance. … The night offered twin 25-lap, $2,525-to-win features for Super Late Models, with the No. 25 honoring Gurley. … Three cautions slowed the 15-minute feature, including a lap-14 tangle between Bubba Lackey and Tim Roszell battling for 11th and a spinning Lackey on lap 23. Both incidents occurred in turn two. ... Twelve drivers completed the distance. ... Tom Maddox, T.J. Alford and Jonathon Chapman scratched from the night's second feature event.
On the move: Brandon Brown of Cullman, Ala., started 18th and finished 11th.
