Daulton Wilson scored a $50,000 602 Crate victory at his home track.
What won the race: Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., led all 60 laps largely unchallenged en route to winning Saturday's XR 602 Crate Nationals at Fayetteville Motor Speedway. Wilson beat Chase Blackwell to the checkers by 1.796 seconds at his home track, earning his first victory of the season and a $50,000 check that's the most lucrative payday of his career.
Quotable: “This is awesome. This is where I learned how to race, and I’ve had a lot of great people that supported me and believed in me along the way,” Wilson said. “To be able to come back here and race, you know this is really special. I got my entire family here tonight. My brother, you know he busts his butt down here for his customers, and I appreciate him getting me pointed in the right direction, to get me started.”
Key notes: Wilson’s previous largest payday was the $15,000 Lucas Oil-sanctioned finale at East Bay Raceway Park on Feb. 10, 2024. … Wilson captured his first win of any kind since last fall's Big Daddy Classic at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Ky., worth $5,000. ... Third-starting Chase Blackwell pursued Wilson the entire distance but never truly challenged him for the lead. ... Seventh-starting Kenny Collins secured a podium finish after taking third from Dillon Brown on a lap-38 restart. ... Brown lost power and slowed from fifth to draw the race's eighth caution on lap 35. He retired and was credited with 19th. ... Teenager Beckham Malone rounded out the top five after advancing from his 11th starting spot. ... John Ruggiero Jr. was credited with sixth after Benji Hicks was disqualified in postrace technical inspection; Ruggiero overcame a flat left-rear tire in his heat and started 21st after winning the consolation. ... Apparent 10th-place finisher Dalton Peavy was also DQ'd following postrace tech. Peavy was involved in a lap-38 melee that eliminated David Smith, Jason Dickerson and Tyler Payne. ... Luke Cooper placed seventh after rebounding from a heat race spin. ... Dustin Mitchell started 20th and finished ninth. ... Ethan Wilson, younger brother of Daulton Wilson, was the race's first retiree. ... The 60-lap main event lasted 52 minutes, with 16 starters completing the distance. ... Jake Jackson won a C-main consolation that was cut to 17 laps (from 18) after 34 minutes. ... The night's fifth heat race was delayed by a 30-minute red flag when Luke Cooper spun in front of the field, collecting Blake Craft, Jarrett Jones and Gary Jones, became airborne and landed on top of Craft's machine. All drivers were OK, but Craft and Gary Jones did not continue.
On the move: John Ruggiero Jr. of Lincolnton, N.C., started 21st and finished sixth.
