Layton Sullivan celebrates his first career Crate Racin' USA victory.
What won the race: Fifth-starting Layton Sullivan of Gaffney, S.C., muscled his way by race-long leader Ben Faircloth on the final lap to steal Saturday's $10,000 inaugural Daniel Lambert Memorial at Screven Motor Speedway. Sullivan beat Faircloth to the line by 0.607 of a second for his first career Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA victory in his fifth series start.
Quotable: “I felt really good the whole race, and I got so mad at (car owner Dennis Franklin) cause he was telling me to go to the top I’m pretty sure,” Sullivan said. “I knew we had a car to win. I started trying the top and had good runs, just couldn’t do nothing with them, kept having cautions. We took off that last time, there was a little opening through the middle, and I just went for it. Let it eat.”
Key notes: Layton Sullivan notched the second victory of his young career and his first since June 27, 2020, a $2,000 Fastrak Racing Series triumph at Toccoa (Ga.) Raceway. ... Ben Faircloth led the opening 49 laps of the 50-lapper before Sullivan slammed into him in turn two, sending him wide on the final lap. Faircloth showed displeasure by making heavy contact with Sullivan following the checkers, sending Sullivan's car spinning onto the backstretch apron. Faircloth was initially disqualified and relegated to 28th in the final rundown before CRUSA officials rescinded their decision and reverted Faircloth to the race's runner up. ... Jeremy Steele rounded out the podium after inheriting third when Matt Henderson slipped on a late restart. Steele took the early season points lead, while Henderson was credited with 14th. ... Austin Bloodworth spun to trigger the race's seventh and final caution on lap 49, setting up a one-lap dash to the finish. ... Caleb Gay appeared to spin from sixth following contact with Ches Chester on lap 46. Chester was credited for causing the caution and sent to the tail of the field. Gay retained his position and finished fourth. ... Will Roland, last year's CRUSA Winter Shootout champ, retired from 17th on lap 20. ... The 50-lap feature lasted 48 minutes, with 16 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Jake Rainey of Powder Springs, Ga., started 14th and finished fifth.
