Derek Fisher gets rolling before his victory at 191 Speedway.
What won the race: Sliding by early leader Shannon Thornsberry and overcoming a series of late-race restarts, second-starting Derek Fisher of Olympia, Ky., led the final 29 laps to win Saturday's Cannonball 40 at Kentucky's 191 Speedway. Fisher sped to the $5,000 victory 0.781 of a second ahead of Rusty Schlenk for his first career Ultimate Heart of America Series victory and his first 2025 victory.
Quotable: “That was a hell of a race. I thought I was gonna go backwards for a little bit,” Fisher said. “I got into the wall, figured I’d go to the bottom and try hitting it and it stuck, so we went for it after that.”
Key notes: Derek Fisher's previous touring victory at 191 was Nov. 9's Southern All Starsevent. ... Fisher notched his fifth career 191 feature victory. ... Shannon Thornsberry led the opening 11 laps from the pole before slipping to third. ... Rusty Schlenk, winner of last Saturday's $5,000 season opener at Montpelier (Ind.) Speedway, muscled his way by David Webb for second on the final lap, causing Webb to spin and drawing the race's seventh caution. Schlenk never challenged Fisher on the final restart, while Webb settled for fifth. ... Seth Daniels overcame a lap-15 spin to finish fourth. ... Blake Creech ran as high as second in the early going before spinning from fourth on lap 14; he rebounded to sixth. ... Todd Brennan drew the fifth and sixth slowdowns before retiring: lap 21 for debris when his spoiler ripped off and lap 30 when he came to a stop in the second turn. ... Josh Rice never ran higher than eighth and retired on the 13th lap running 10th. ... The second yellow flag came on lap 12 for a three-car pileup that eliminated Kenneth Howell and Brad Rickels; Joe Mayabb continued for a dozen more laps before retiring. ... Eighth-running Jacob Stuhr spun out of turn four for the opening caution on lap seven. ... The 40-lap main event lasted 29 minutes, with seven starters completing the distance. ... Andrew Mayabb scratched. ... "Dukes of Hazzard" actor John Schneider sang the national anthem.
On the move: Larry Martin Jr. of Maysville, Ky., started 12th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Fisher’s Mike Swartz-owned Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by Swartz Construction and Tree Removal, Swartz Farms, Swartz Rentals, Wayne Bowen Racing Supplies and Graphic Impressions.
