Joseph Joiner led all 50 laps for a $10,000 victory at his home track.
What won the race: Fending off early challenges from Mark Whitener, second-starting Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., led all 50 laps for a dominating hometown victory in Saturday's Easter race at Southern Raceway. Joiner beat Dalton Cook to the line by a full second to claim the $10,000 top prize, his first Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series victory in the tour's inaugural season.
Quotable: “(Southern Raceway) is right down the road, we grew up racing here. I’ve got more laps than I could ever count here,” Joiner said. “I’ve raced here a lot and kinda know what it takes to make it happen here, I guess. It’s been good to us, ya know. It’s our home track, everybody’s got that home track. The Capital car has been digging pretty good. We struggled a couple times as well, but as a whole, our whole program is moving forward really well.”
Key notes: Joseph Joiner grabbed his second victory of the season at his home track (March 21 Bash at the Beach opener) and the 15th of his career, dating back to Aug. 2014. ... Joiner earned his third career five-figure payday, matching his most lucrative win at Southern and boosting his total winnings to more than $70,000. ... Mark Whitener took second from Dalton Cook on the eighth lap and pursued Joiner until slowing with a flat right rear on lap 39, drawing the race's second caution. Whitener could only rebound to seventh after changing the tire. ... The pole-starting Cook, of Smiths Station, Ala., reclaimed second on the lap-39 restart but never truly challenged Joiner in the final stages. ... Ashton Winger prevailed after a fierce battle with Trey Mills for fifth. Mills recovered to finish sixth after slowing with a flat right rear on lap 41. ... Clay Harris also suffered a flat right-rear tire on lap 48; he pitted and was credited with eighth, the final driver to complete 50 laps. ... Fifth-running Matt Dooley slowed to trigger the fifth and final yellow flag as Joiner was coming to take the white. Dooley limped off with an apparent flat tire and did not finish. ... Stephen Brantley slowed from 10th on lap 34 for the first slowdown. ... Austin Morris created havoc amongst the leaders as he was being lapped before retiring on lap 13. ... Ryan Crane, winner of March 22's $7,000 Bash at the Beach finale, was the race's first retiree. ... The program was delayed an hour when the turns three and four bank of lights went dark before Late Model heats. Track officials setup temporary lighting to get through the night.
On the move: Bo Slay of Milton, Fla., started 10th and finished fourth.
