Tyler Erb and team celebrate a $21,000 Spring Nationals triumph.
What won the race: Winning a caution-plagued marathon at high-banked Tazewell Speedway, Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, led the final 34 laps of Saturday's Lil' Bill Corum Memorial to earn $21,000 and his first career Schaeffer's Spring Nationals victory. The 11th-starting Erb took the checkers ahead of 13th-starting Jimmy Owens in a race slowed by nine yellow flags, many for flat tires. Polesitter Brandon Overton led 41 laps before a flat tire knocked him from the lead; he finished third.
Quotable: “It was awesome, man. I enjoyed it," Erb said. "We broke a transmission today, knocked a radiator out in the heat race. We didn't work harder than anybody else, we just ain't had (things) go our way, but tonight it did."
Key notes: Tyler Erb ended a drought of 34 feature starts without a victory; his previous triumph came in November's $30,000 National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City. ... Dale McDowell, winner of the previous two Corum Memorials, lost the second spot on the 12th lap when he pitted to change a flat right-rear tire. ... Mike Marlar lost a top-five run when he parked during a lap-30 caution. ... Nine cautions slowed the 75-lapper, including for Brandon Overton's lap-42 flat. ... Garrett Smith drew the first caution when he slowed and pulled to the infield after 12 laps. ... Ross Bailes slowed on lap 25. ... Tour points leader Wil Herrington had a flat right-rear on the 31st lap. ... Suspension problems forced third-running Cory Hedgecock to slow on the 40th lap. ... Ricky Weiss slowed on the 46th lap and Pierce McCarter drew another caution on the ensuing restart. ... Forrest Trent had a flat on lap 56 (and another yellow appeared on the restart). ... Live timing wasn't available after the scoring loop was inadvertently damaged. ... In the first heat, Camaron Marlar spun and high-centered on the blunt end of the frontstretch wall; he was OK. ... The event honored Bill Corum, a Hall of Famer at three tracks and winner of more than 300 races, including 1981’s NDRA Stroh’s 100 at Atomic Speedway.
On the move: Runner-up Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., started 13th.
