Terry Phillips celebrates his first victory in more than three years.
What won the race: Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., controlled all 50 laps handily in winning Saturday night's $10,000 Charlie Lavicky Memorial at Enid Speedway, securing his first career victories on the Ross Foundation Sooner Late Models and United Rebel Late Model Series in the co-sanctioned special. Phillips beat Kip Hughes by 1.447 seconds for his first feature victory in three years.
Key notes: Phillips, who briefly contemplated retirement, earned his first special event victory since June 4, 2022, worth $5,000 on the Comp Cams Series at I-30 in Little Rock, Ark. ... Phillips swept the weekend after winning Friday's 20-lap qualifier that gave him the pole starting spot. ... Third-starting Kip Hughes reclaimed the runner-up spot from Jon Herring Jr. on a lap-27 restart, but never truly threatened Phillips in the second half of the race. ... Hughes trailed Phillips for all but nine laps; Herring settled for third. ... Dax Harless and R.J. Ramer each improved nine positions to finish 10th and 11th. ... Dan Smith retired from third on lap three. ... The 50-lapper was slowed by three cautions and lasted 36 minutes, with seven starters completing the distance. ... Tanner Mullens (engine), Jake Nightingale, Steve Hewitt Sr., and Drew Harless scratched after Friday's prelim action.
On the move: Scott Phillips of Salina, Kan., started 21st and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Phillips drives a Mann Motorsports Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Andy’s Frozen Custard, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Keyser Manufacturing, Don Babb Motorsports, VP Racing Fuels and Midwest Sheet Metal.
