Jason Feger waves the checkers after his $10,000 victory.
What won the race: Winning a side-by-side duel with Dillon McCowan in the first half of the race, series points leader Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., took control for good on the 19th lap and raced to a $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory at Red Hill Raceway. Feger's fifth tour victory of the season came 1.393 seconds ahead of McCowan at the 3/8-mile oval.
Quotable: "I was just patient. This place is typically really hard on tires, and Dillon — I wanted to get up on that top, too — but I didn't think my car would be as good as it was around the bottom, and it drove around it pretty effortlessly and felt really good," Feger said. "So I was gonna stay down there as long as I could just because I knew it was gonna be a lot easier on my tires and just keep pressuring Dillon. He kept running harder and harder and I could see his grip starting to give up on him a little bit."
Key notes: Feger notched his 35th career Hell Tour victory. ... Feger, whose fifth victory tied Tyler Erb for the most of the Summer Nationals this season, led the 12th lap and then 19-40. ... Three of Feger's five victories have paid five figures (weekend races typically pay $10,000). ... Dillon McCowan, who led laps 1-11 and 12-18, settled for second. ... Polesitter Tyler Millwood, a first-time series winner a night earlier in La Salle, Ill., started on the pole and ran third for 17 laps, but a broken spoiler ended his chances. ... Three cautions slowed the action, including the 27th lap to remove Millwood's spoiler debris from the racing surface. ... Kyle Hammer went around for a lap-28 spin. ... The first start was called back for ninth-starting Cody Mahoney's turn-four spin before taking the green (he retired). ... The feature started about 11:20 p.m. ... Tyler Erb was aboard his orange General Lee-themed No. 01 Rocket Chassis that he debuted at Eldora's Dream XXXI after engine failure in his primary (green) car Thursday night at La Salle. ... Carson Brown lowered the track record in time trials.
On the move: Brian Rickman of Columbus, Miss., started 17th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Feger’s Longhorn Chassis has a Clements Racing Engine with sponsorship from Titan Industries, SC Online Sales, Hoker Trucking, The Big Cheese MM, Out-Pace Racing Products, CorrosionX, Multi Fire Wires, RemTek Enterprises, RLM Enterprises, Cheap Cars, FK Rod Ends, Keyser Manufacturing, Speedwerx, Go Lithium Battery, Bilstein Shocks, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, Wehrs Machine, VP Racing Fuels, Griffin Sign Shop and Limelight Graphics.
