Josh Zimpel heads for his first WISSOTA Challenge Series victory.
What won the race: Regaining the lead from Cole Searing with three laps remaining, Josh Zimpel of Braham, Minn., on Saturday captured his first Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory, earning $5,000 at Ogilvie Raceway. Zimpel, who led the first 32 laps but allowed Searing to sneak past, got rolling again on a late restart and took the checkers 0.424 of a second ahead of Searing, who led laps 33-37.
Quotable: "I knew I was kind of getting tight and slowing down through that traffic there, and then I seen Cole (Searing) come and I seen only a handful (of laps) left," Zimpel said. "So I got a chance again with that yellow, and I knew that he was running the bottom down here, so I just drove it in as hard as I could and it stuck and then I kind of just drove and kind of blocked him because I knew where he was running. Man, that was awesome."
Key notes: Josh Zimpel captured his first career Late Model touring victory. ... He grabbed his first Ogilvie victory since racing in the hornet division. ... Six cautions slowed the 40-lapper, the first on the ninth lap when third-running Tyler Peterson spun in turn two (Cody Lee spun on the ensuing restart). ... On the 21st lap, Lee spun in turn one. ... A lap-24 yellow dropped for debris and Joel Bennett spun on the restart (officials ruled that Jeremy Nelson caused the caution and sent him to the tail). ... Taylor Madrinich slowed on the 38th lap. .... The feature concluded just after 12:15 a.m. ... Shane Edginton scratched with engine problems. ... The first two WCS events of the weekend rained out at ABC Raceway in Ashland, Wis., and Gondik Law Speedway in Superior, Wis. ... Sunday's race is scheduled to conclude the weekend at Granite City Motor Park in Sauk Rapids, Minn.
On the move: Joel Bennett of Hortonville, Wis., started 16th and finished fifth.
