What won the race: Slipping by race-long leader Kevin Eder on the 29th lap, third-starting Shane Sabraski of Rice, Minn., outdueled Billy Kendall in the closing stages to win Sunday's 40-lap Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series feature at Granite City Motor Park. Sabraski rode the cushion back to the lead on lap 38 and paced the final three circuits, beating Kendall to the line by 0.202 of a second to win $3,000, his second Challenge Series victory of the season.
Quotable: “What a fun race that was, man, (challengers) were coming from out of everywhere,” Sabraski said. “I seen someone roll around the outside of me a couple times, even when I was behind (Kevin) Eder, I didn’t know if it was Billy (Kendall) or Cole (Searing). We had a good turnout and clean race tonight, that’s cool.”
Key notes: Sabraski led twice for nine laps (29-34, 38-40) in securing his sixth career WCS victory, four of them coming last year in his rookie season. ... He also won $3,000 on May 30 at Fiesta City Speedway in Montevideo, Minn. ... Sabraski notched his 981st career multidivisional feature win. ... Sixth-starting Billy Kendall stuck primarily to the bottom line in taking control from Sabraski on lap 35, leading until Sabraski powered back around him on the 38th lap. ... Kevin Eder led the opening 28 laps before slipping to third. ... Cole Searing ran as high as third just before halfway then settled in fourth after Kendall worked his way by. ... Josh Zimpel, one night removed from his first career Challenge Series victory, gained three spots for an eighth place finish. ... Dave Mass trailed Eder for nine of the first 10 laps before fading to ninth. ... The race was slowed by two cautions, the first coming on the ninth lap when 10th-running Jared Zimpel appeared to hit the turn one wall before retiring with heavy right front damage. He was credited with 16th. ... Debris in turn two triggered the second and final stoppage on lap 31, setting up the nine-lap sprint where Sabraski and Kendall each led three of the last six circuits. ... The 40-lapper lasted just shy of 20 minutes, with 15 starters running at the finish. ... Ryan Corbett and Todd Frank scratched.
