Jason Feger grabbed his fifth MARS Series victory this season.
What won the race: Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., fended off mid-race challenges from Mike Spatola, then a late surge from Shannon Babb for a flag-to-flag victory in Friday's Big Daddy Scrap 40 at Kankakee County Speedway. Feger beat Babb by 0.930 of a second for his fifth MARS Late Model Championship Series victory this season and 32nd of his career, moving him past Jesse Stovall and into sole possession of third on the tour's all-time win list.
Quotable: “The track was a little tricky tonight, it didn’t feel like it had as much grip as normal. I think we just maybe missed the setup a little bit, but it was good enough,” Feger said. “My raceceiver quit working there, that’s always frustrating and I knew Shannon (Babb) must’ve been good, he started pretty far back and up to second, so I wasn’t quite sure where he was running either.”
Key notes: Feger captured his second MARS victory at Kankakee after his first $5,000 payday there in May of 2023. ... It's his 12th overall feature win this season and his second at Kankakee after also topping June's $5,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals stop. ... Ninth-starting Shannon Babb, who overcame an opening lap spin, went fifth-to-second on a lap-34 restart and trailed Feger the final seven laps, but never truly challenged for the lead. ... Eighth-starting Mike Spatola moved into second on a lap-three restart and trailed Feger until Jake Little passed him on a lap-31 restart. ... Little trailed Feger until Babb slipped by him a few laps later. ... Ryan Unzicker, Feger's closest challenger, slipped from fourth on the lap-31 restart before pitting with a flat right-rear tire under a lap-37 caution. He could only rebound to finish ninth. ... The race was slowed by seven separate incidents, including four in the first eight laps: Caden McWhorter and Justin Duty tangled on lap two, eliminating Duty. McWhorter continued until slowing for the sixth caution on lap 34, then retiring. ... Daryn Klein spun from third on lap three, then slowed from 13th with a flat right-rear for the lap-31 stoppage. He continued to finish 12th, the first starter off the lead lap. ... Chase Osterhoff slowed and retired on lap 37 for the final slowdown. He was credited with 16th. ... The 40-lapper lasted 34 minutes with 11 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Runner-up Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., started ninth.
