Mike Mullen and supporters celebrate his second Dirt Kings win this season.
What won the race: Outdueling polesitter Nick Anvelink to lead the final two laps, 10th-starting Mike Mullen of Seymour, Wis., earned $3,500 with a victory in Friday's Ted Dolhun Classic Sr. on the Wabam Dirt Kings Tour at Plymouth Dirt Track. Anvelink, who won the lion's share of $4,500 in lap money by leading 37 circuits, tried high and low to regain the point, but settled for second exiting turn four on the last lap as the frontrunners finished just behind a slower car. Mullen, a winner nine days earlier at The Hill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., became the Wisconsin tour's first two-time winner of the season.
Quotable: "As far back as we did, we caught a break with a wreck. Unfortunate for those guys, you never want to see anyone wreck, but cautions fell our way, and then I knew if I just keep pace with Nick (Anvelink), I didn't think I'd be able to pass him until lapped cars," Mullen said. "He missed the bottom just enough there and took (the bottom). I know he was out there and I slid up knowing that was my only shot and I didn't even know the race was over until two laps later."
Key notes: Mullen's ninth career Dirt Kings victory puts him second on the all-time list behind Anvelink (29). ... Third-finishing Brett Swedberg led only the third lap. ... Three cautions slowed the action, the first on the second lap when track champ Taylor Scheffler spun out of second to trigger a pileup that eliminated Brad Mueller, Justin Schmidt and Troy Springborn (Mueller attempted to return without the car's nosepiece but ended up retiring). ... Justin Ritchie stopped in turn four on the 18th lap and, three laps later, Shawn Miller spun in turn three. ... Dave Schoenberger scratched from the feature. ... McGrath had a shot at a $2,100 bonus posted for any driver that could set fast time, win a heat and win the feature, but he fell short in the main event (McGrath's car was hampered in the lap-two incident). ... The series returns to Plymouth for the Sept. 20 tour finale. ... The event paid tribute to Ted Dohlun Sr., the longtime driver and racing supporter from Franklin, Wis. ... The weekend, that continues Saturday at Shawano, is just the second two-race weekend on the series season.
