What won the race: Hometown racer Ross Robinson grabbed the lead from race-long pacesetter Trevor Collins on lap 17 and survived a last-lap challenge from Carson Ferguson to capture Tuesday night’s 25-lap Camp Barnes Benefit Race for Super Late Models at Georgetown Speedway. Robinson beat Lincolnton, N.C.’s Ferguson to the finish line by 0.745 of a second for a $5,600 winner’s check and his third career victory in the 53rd annual charity event.
Quotable: “I wasn’t sure if I was going to get (Collins),” Robinson said. “And then when we had that caution, the top was the place to be but I didn’t take off down the front straightaway good. Luckily I was able to get next to Daniel (Hilsabeck) going into three. After that I got clear from him and I was like, ‘I got to get him before the next caution comes out.’ And he was running really, really hard around that top … I think I just kept hunting him and got him working hard. And he was doing a heck of a job.”
Key notes: A Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series regular from 2022 until dropping off the tour earlier this year, Robinson won the Camp Barnes event for the second straight year and third time since ’22. … It was Robinson’s first win of any kind this season. … Ferguson, a Lucas Oil Series regular who invaded Georgetown between the national tour’s dates at Pennsylvania’s Port Royal Speedway and Lernerville Speedway, vaulted from fourth to second on lap 19 and pulled nearly to Robinson’s rear bumper at the white flag. But Robinson gained several car lengths rounding turns three and four on the final circuit as Ferguson’s hopes for an inside move were hampered by a lapped car. … Other Lucas Oil Series travelers joining the field were Daniel Hilsabeck, who followed Ferguson past Collins on lap 19 and finished third, and seventh-place finisher Clay Harris. … Donald Lingo Jr. finished fourth while Collins settled for fifth after leading laps 1-16. … The race’s lone caution flag flew on lap seven for Dale Murphy slowing on the backstretch. ... Mark Pettyjohn and Coleby Frye scratched. … After the feature, Robinson added a victory in a 6-lap shootout dash for the top-three finishers in the Super Late Model and big-block modified features. He made an outside pass to take the lead from big-block feature winner Billy Pauch Jr. and drove away for a bonus payoff of $727. … New Jersey’s Pauch said during post-race ceremonies that he’s planning to make his Dirt Late Model debut in Sept. 6’s Fall Clash event at Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway. … The night’s overall purse received a $3,000 bump thanks to the Delaware State Police Department, which for the past five decades has organized the race to benefit Camp Barnes, a summer youth camp run by the Delaware State Police.
On the move: Carson Ferguson of Lincolnton, N.C., started eighth and finished second.
