What won the race: Powering around early leader Jake Hartung on the third lap, second-starting Billy Kendall of Walker, Minn., held off late challenges from Jayme Lautigar to pace the final 23 circuits in winning Wednesday's second $2,611 Twin Ports Twin 25 feature at Gondik Law Speedway. Kendall beat Ashley Anderson by 1.404 seconds for his first career special event victory and first on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series.
Quotable: “I don’t know if we were the best, but good enough I guess. I know I saw (Jayme) Lautigar outside of me and I was using up everything, using the whole track to make it happen,” Kendall said. “I can’t even believe it, this is my biggest win ever, it’s crazy. We had a good car, quick time, this thing is like a mud missile, so trying to get it work in the dry is a little tricky.”
Key notes: Kendall joined Dave Mass, who led the final 22 laps to win the night's first Twin 25 feature, as first-time Challenge Series winners. ... Kendall captured his third overall feature win this season, adding to local WISSOTA Late Model triumphs May 31 at Hibbing (Minn.) Speedway and Aug. 7 at Grand Rapids (Minn.) Speedway where he was recently crowned track champion. ... His victory makes it 27 winners through the event's 40 main events, with no driver ever sweeping both night's races. Mass started 11th and finished 13th in the second 25-lapper. ... Tenth-starting Ashley Anderson registered his second runner-up finish of the night after slipping by Jayme Lautigar on the final lap. Lautigar settled for third after showing his nose outside Kendall a couple of times following a lap-14 restart, but was never able to draw alongside. ... Travis Budisalovich battled Lautigar for second before Anderson passed both of them in the late going, moving from fifth-to-second between laps 21-25. ... Kyle Peterlin pursued Kendall from laps 11-14 before fading to finish fifth. ... Jake Hartung led the opening two laps before sliding back to seventh. He led the opening three laps of the first Twin 25 race before an 11th-place result. ... Pat Doar, winner of July's Great Lakes Border Battle at Gondik Law, settled for finishes of 14th and 15th in the twin features. ... Sammy Mars spun from seventh for the lone stoppage on lap 14. He did not continue. ... The race lasted just shy of 14 minutes. ... Joel Bennett finished 18th as the final starter to complete 25 laps, his second 18th-place result of the evening. Bennett, Jake Redetzke and Kevin Burdick joined Shane Sabraski in receiving penalties for deck height violations following the first two heat races. Redetzke scratched for the night, while Burdick failed to transfer out of a consolation. ... Dan Bargender scratched after hard frontstretch wall contact during the fourth heat race.
On the move: Shane Sabraski, of Rice, Minn., overcame a deck-height violation earlier in the night to start 16th and finish sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Kendall’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Metalwerx, Hitch Harness, Nistler Floor Covering, Mohawk, KST Services LLC and Red’s Racing Supply.
