What won the race: Ashley Anderson of Elk Mound, Wis., fired off from the outside front row and held off a mid-race challenge from Darrell Nelson in leading all 40 laps of Thursday's 53rd annual Silver 1000 at Proctor Speedway. Anderson beat Nelson to the checkers by 0.433 of a second for the $5,000 payday, his first on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series.
Quotable: “(It) feels good, nice to do it back in a Late Model (after winning the modified portion of the Silver 1000 in 2019),” Anderson said. “I hate starting on the front row and I was nervous when I seen (Darrell Nelson was behind me).”
Key notes: It was the second time Anderson took the checkers first in a Silver 1000 event at Proctor after he was disqualified from winning the 2007 edition for an intake manifold issue; Terry Casey of New London, Wis., was lifted to claim the $2,500 top prize. ... It was his third overall Silver 1000 triumph after winning the modified portion in 2019. ... Anderson earned his third overall feature victory this season, the first out of his home state, joining wins on Aug. 1 at New Richmond's Cedar Lake Speedway in unsanctioned Limiteds and Aug. 22 at Menomonie's Red Cedar Speedway in WISSOTA Late Models. ... Fourth-starting Darrell Nelson moved to second by lap three and pressured Anderson the rest of the way. Nelson's closest challenges came at the race's halfway mark when he drew within 0.012 of a second on lap 20 and 0.070 of a second of Anderson on the ensuing lap. Nelson fought off late-race pressure from Kevin Burdick, allowing Anderson to pull away at the end. ... Derek Vesel held fourth until Sammy Mars passed him on lap 25, triggering a backslide that placed him eighth at the finish. ... Points leader Dave Mass improved six positions to finish sixth. ... Dave Flynn held fifth for the opening 13 laps until fading to finish 14th. ... Mike Bellefeuille (lap 28) and Brett Shafer (lap 15) were the race's only two retirees. ... The non-stop feature lasted 12 minutes, with 21 starters completing 40 laps.
On the move: Sammy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., started 10th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Anderson’s MB Customs Race Car carries sponsorship from Anderson Bridges, A.B.I. Incorporated, H&H Plumbing, HT Automotive, Kyote’s Den Bar & Grill, Kiptynz Pumpkynz, CMD Race Shocks and JigE Signs.
