Zack Mitchell captured his first Hunt the Front Series victory this season.
What won the race: Zack Mitchell commanded Saturday’s Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series debut at Southern Raceway from start to finish as the Enoree, S.C., driver led all 50 laps of the Rumble at the Races for the $12,000 victory. Mitchell beat Dalton Cook by 0.823 of a second for his fourth career Hunt the Front Series victory and eighth overall feature win this season.
Quotable: “We got a little bit of luck in that heat race, but I’d rather be lucky than good any day. It feels good just to be standing up here, we’ve kinda had a tough last month and a half. It’s just been one thing after another, bad luck,” Mitchell said before adding, “I think (our championship chances) are good, we got a million laps around (Cherokee Speedway). But Jimmy (Owens) is Jimmy, he’s tough to beat, so we’ll see.”
Key notes: Mitchell's last Hunt the Front Series victory came in last fall's Red Farmer Tribute at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala., worth $15,097. ... His win nearly erased Jimmy Owens's points lead, leaving Owens ahead by two markers with two races left in the season. ... Fifth-finishing Owens, of Newport, Tenn., leads all drivers with three series wins thus far. ... Joseph Joiner ran second from laps 10-30, but lost the runner-up spot to Dalton Cook, who reclaimed the spot on the lap-30 restart. … The weekend was originally slated to open with Friday’s $8,000-to-win prelim before it rained out. … Three cautions slowed the feature: Lap 10 for 12th-running Bo Slay’s spin entering turn one, which also collected Oakley Johns; lap 30 when Johns lost his right-rear wheel and tire; and lap 33 for ninth-running Mario Gresham, who slowed on the backstretch with apparent engine issues. ... The 50-lapper lasted 23 minutes with nine starters completing the distance.
On the move: Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., started 11th and finished fourth.
