Mark Whitener celebrates a $15,000 victory after leading all 75 laps.
What won the race: Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., fired off from his outside front row starting position and never looked back, leading all 75 laps to capture Saturday's third annual Swamp Cabbage 100 at Hendry County Motorsports Park. Whitener won the $15,000 Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA Winter Shootout Series finale by 3.833 seconds over Pearson Lee Williams for his first victory of the season.
Quotable: “This place is unique. You can get on the wheel and get on the top," Whitener said. "I noticed it cleaned up on the bottom. I knew that I couldn’t mess up and get out of the groove cause Pearson (Lee Williams) was behind me and I knew he’d drive me clean, but I just knew that he'd pass me. I just stuck to my guns (on the bottom) and if he felt to the outside of me, then we was just gonna make it a race.”
Key notes: Whitener, the 2023 CRUSA national champ, notched his sixth career Winter Shootout Series victory and his first since Jan. 21, 2022, a $1,500 prelim at nearby Volusia Speedway Park. ... Whitener picked up his first full-field victory in 604 Crates since Dec. 6's $20,000 Showdown on the Coast at Georgia's Golden Isles Speedway. ... The third-starting Williams took second from Cody Overton on the fourth lap and trailed Whitener the rest of the way. ... The pole-starting Overton spun while third to draw the race's first caution on lap six. He recovered to run as high as 16th before retiring the Big Frog Motorsports entry on lap 52. ... Nevin Gainey took third and Brenden Smith fourth when Sam Seawright slipped out of the groove on lap 37; Kaede Loudy, who started 18th, passed Seawright the following lap, relegating Seawright to a sixth-place finish that was enough to clinch his first career Winter Shootout Series title. ... Seawright's closest points challenger, Wil Herrington, ran as high as fourth before pitting with a flat right-rear tire under a lap-12 red flag. He only rebounded to 14th before pulling off on lap 59. ... The lap-12 red flag lasted 10 minutes after Clay Harris spun from 16th and collected Chase Giddens and Eli Johnson. Giddens spun sideways to avoid Harris, with Johnson's nose wedging under Giddens's car and forcing it up and over, eventually coming to rest on the driver's side. ... All drivers were OK, but Giddens and Johnson did not continue while Harris finished 12th. ... Ivedent Lloyd Jr. and Jason Garver tangled for a caution on lap 48. Lloyd placed 11th while Garver, winner of 2023's inaugural Swamp Cabbage, called it a night. ... Payton Stevenson's right-front nosepiece became lodged under his tire, triggering the fifth and final yellow flag on lap 62. ... The 75-lapper lasted 44 minutes with 13 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Brenden Smith of Dade City, Fla., started 19th and finished fourth.
