Winner Ricky Weiss flanked by Daulton Wilson (right) and Cory Hedgecock on the I-75 podium.
What won the race: Sliding by Trey Mills as they negotiated lapped traffic, Ricky Weiss took command on the 31st circuit and paced the remaining distance to win Saturday's Hunt The Front Super Dirt Series Championship Kickoff at I-75 Raceway. Third-starting Weiss, originally of Headingley, Manitoba, now residing in Monterey, Tenn., took the checkers 0.603 of a second ahead of Daulton Wilson to score his first series victory, worth $20,000.
Quotable: “That was a hell of a race. I got next to Trey (Mills) and was running real good, Jimmy (Owens) showed me that line on the bottom,” Weiss said. “I got next to Trey and he did exactly what he needed to do, he’s a smart driver … I could tell he was getting a little snug on exit, I tried to arc my corner just to do something different than he was and I could gain a little bit and judge off of him. Jimmy and I actually went over and talked tires a little bit before the feature, so thanks to him for that and just being a straight up dude.”
Key notes: Weiss notched his second major victory in the last week after capturing March 1's Toilet Bowl Classic at Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway, snapping a nearly 18-month dry spell in Super Late Model action. ... Seventh-starting Daulton Wilson overtook Trey Mills for second on lap 32, trailing Weiss to the finish. ... Cory Hedgecock of nearby Loudon, Tenn., climbed nine positions to finish third. ... The second-starting Mills, of St. Augustine, Fla., led the opening 30 circuits before giving way to Weiss, eventually fading to finish fourth. ... Ten-starting Dalton Cook rounded out the top five. ... Mike Marlar rallied from 18th to come home sixth. ... The first of four cautions waved on lap two after eighth-running Michael Page went over the turn-three banking; he rebounded to finished 12th. ... Polesitter Camaron Marlar was the first retiree after also going off the track in turn three, which brought out a yellow flag on the 15th lap. ... Oakley Johns and Dillard Hatchett were both able to continue following solo spins. ... A reworking of the track surface pushed the feature start back about an hour. ... The 50-lapper lasted 24 minutes with 18 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., started 12th and finished third.
