After a nasty and cold winter pounded most of the country, things have finally began to warm up slightly as the 2011 racing has begun to get a foothold in the southern half of the country.

While rain has washed out its fair share of races over the past month, cold weather really hasn’t been a concern for us Southerners. Unseasonably warm temperatures have greeted us as we have made our way to races like the Bama Bash and the Modoc 100.

In 2004, I attended Green Valley Speedway’s Bama Bash for the first time and watched Rick Eckert top a field of nearly 70 Super Late Models for a $15,000 payday. This past weekend I went back to the Bama Bash for the first time since then and watched Ronnie Johnson earn $10,000 for winning the same event that attracted only 40 entries.
