New Mexico track joins January slate
Scheduling the biggest Super Late Model weekend in track history, Southern New Mexico Speedway has scheduled three unsanctioned events for Jan. 20-22 for a winter weekend of action seeking to draw drivers heading to Arizona Speedway’s Wild West Shootout.
The yet-to-be-named event at Las Cruces, N.M., will be co-promoted by SNMS general manager Rue Stone and local driver Fito Gallardo with primary sponsorship from Barnett Harley-Davidson, G3 Fitness and Mesilla Valley Transportation.
Practice is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 19, with $3,000-to-win Super Late Model events scheduled for Jan. 20 and 21 and a $5,000-to-win Super Late Model finale on Jan. 22. USRA modifieds and X-mods will also compete each night, giving the SNMS weekend the same divisions competing at Phoenix-area Arizona Speedway during Jan. 7-15’s six-race Wild West Shootout.
With nine events between Arizona Speedway and Southern New Mexico Speedway over 16 days, “I think it’s going to attract more guys to come out now,” Stone said, “and not just Late Models, but modifieds, too, (for) points races with guys in the Midwest coming out and getting points with the USRA modifieds.”
The 49-year-old Southern New Mexico Speedway oval is a third-mile oval that hosts weekly Limited Late Model, modified, street stock, legend and super truck competition with several special events throughout the season for modifieds and sprint cars. Visit snmspeedway.com for more details.
