Weather claims Smoky Mountain

Facing a gloomy forecast with chances for thunderstorms, the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals cancelled Friday’s event at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn.

The Ray Cook-promoted miniseries is set to conclude Saturday at Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway for the $10,000-to-win finale. Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., leads the tour with 1,554 points over Shanon Buckingham (1,534) and Donald McIntosh (1,526). Overton and McIntosh have three victories apiece. Visit southernnationalsseries.com for more series information.

Other weather-affected specials the last weekend in July:

Clary's Speedway: The Brinkleyville, N.C.'s oval's I-95 Challenge Series event rained out after time trials; instead of a makeup, the track paid drivers based on qualifying.

Canyon Speedway Park: Saturday's Southwest Dirt Racing Association-sanctioned event at the Peoria, Ariz., oval was rained out. No makeup date was announced.

Marion Center Speedway: The Pennsylvania oval's $5,100-to-win Super Late Model event was doomed by overnight rain; the race was rescheduled for Aug. 5.

Skyline Speedway: The Stewart, Ohio, oval's Buckeye Late Model Dirt Week event was washed out.

Batesville Motor Speedway: The Locust Grove, Ark., track's Comp Cams Super Dirt Series was rained out after time trials; no makeup date was immediately announced.

Editor's note: Updates Marion Center's rescheduled date.
