Ex-Indiana racer dies in accident
Former northwestern Indiana Late Model racer Guy Volk was killed Wednesday in a work-related accident in Hobart, Ind. He was 62.
A worker was pinned between a wall and excavating equipment at a construction site where sewer lines were being replaced, according to a report in The Times of Northwest Indiana. The newspaper didn’t reveal Volk’s identification, but Hartford (Motor) Speedway’s Facebook page reported his death.
Driving the No. 77v, Volk, of Portage, Ind., was a long-time competitor in UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned events at Indiana, Illinois and Michigan tracks before retiring in 2015.
He was the 2009 track champion at the former Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell, Ind., when he went winless but posted 10 top-five finishes. His most recent victories came at Hartford in the 2010 and ’11 seasons.
Besides racing in Boswell and Hartford, Volk competed at tracks in Kankakee, Ill., La Salle, Ill., and Plymouth, Ind., in recent seasons.
