Western Iowa champ Hovinga dies

Denny Hovinga of Laurens, Iowa, the winner of more than 400 multidivisional feature races over a dirt racing career stretching from 1960-2000, died Wednesday morning from injuries suffered in a golf cart accident two days earlier. The 76-year-old's death was reported by Crawford County Speedway, where he was a former track champion.

An inaugural member of the Iowa Hall of Fame and Racing Museum, Hovinga piloted Late Models, hobby stocks, sprint cars and modifieds over his lengthy career based in western Iowa. He piled up nearly a dozen track championships at Fairmont (Minn.) Speedway and many Iowa tracks including Denison’s Crawford County Speedway, Webster City’s Hamilton County Speedway, Harlan’s Shelby County Speedway and more.

Among the biggest victories of his career was the Late Model-Modified Challenge at Crawford County in 1992, according to a story by Chad Meyer for Hovinga’s induction into the Kossuth County Museum of Agriculture and Motorsports. The inaugural winner of modified racing’s Harris Clash at Webster City was also a member of the Hamilton County Speedway Hall of Fame.

Besides Iowa and Minnesota, Hovinga also competed in Nebraska, South Dakota, Missouri, Colorado and Arizona.
