Leavell injures neck in Winchester wreck
Veteran driver Joey Leavell of Waynesboro, Va., is at home recovering from a fractured neck vertebrae after getting banged up in a wild, flipping accident in May 26’s Super Late Model feature at Winchester (Va.) Speedway, according to track reports.
Leavell’s accident on the fifth lap of Saturday’s main event saw his Late Model flip in turn three after suspension failure caused his car to dig into the track surface. Rescue personnel cut Leavell from the race car for a trip to a local hospital and racing was halted for the night.
“Just wanted to let everybody know that I’m doing OK,” Leavell wrote on Facebook the day after the accident. “I have a few battle scars, but they I should heal up fine. I really appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers.”
Saturday’s program got a late start because of late afternoon rain and Leavell’s accident pushed past the track's midnight curfew. Officials will reschedule the completion of thee 30-lapper along with the night’s 20-lap Crate Late Model feature. — Track and team reports
