National 100 condensed to one-day show

Because of weather forecasts, the rescheduled 44th annual National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway has been condensed to a single day of competition with a $6,000-to-win Super Late Model feature, the Phenix City, Ala., track announced today.

EAMS owner and promoter Billy Thomas said he changed the schedule to practice on Friday, Jan. 25, and racing on Saturday, Jan. 26, because of already saturated grounds and chances for midweek and Sunday rain.

“We’re just trying to salvage this event and get it in,” said Thomas, who previously cited weather in cancelling the long-running event’s original Nov. 10-11 dates.

The Super Late Model event was originally scheduled to pay $25,000-to-win. When it was rescheduled for Jan. 26-27, the track announced it was $20,000-to-win, but Thomas said that figure was a mistake and some fliers were printed with $20,000- and some $10,000-to-win — the intended purse. The purse was further reduced to $6,000-to-win because of the single-day schedule, he said.

Practice is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday; Thomas said the track may schedule a Race of Champions or run dash races, depending on what drivers enter, but teams aren’t required to compete Friday to enter the following day’s event.

Saturday’s hot laps begin at 10 a.m. followed by qualifying and feature events. Besides Super Late Models, seven other divisions are in action including the National Late Model Super Car Series ($3,000-to-win), 604 Crate Late Models ($2,500-to-win) and 602 Crate Late Models ($2,000-to-win).

Grandstand admission is $10 Friday and $30 Saturday; pit passes are $75 for two days or $45 for Saturday. Because of the schedule changes, DirtonDirt.com will not be providing pay-per-view video. Those ordering packages for either November’s original event or January’s rescheduled event have been refunded.

The track also plans its 2018 track and NLMSCS banquet Saturday evening at T-Bone’s Steakhouse & Grill with dinner at 7 p.m. and the awards program at 8.

Editor's note: Updates with pay-per-view details.
