Cherokee 'heartbroken' by scorer's death

twitter.com/Cherokee_DirtSC

Beloved dirt racing scorer Ginger Owens died Wednesday evening at her Gaffney, S.C., home after a 14-month battle with cancer. She was 38.

Owens, most recently serving as national tech support for Westhold Timing and Scoring, worked many high-profile racing events including for the Ultimate Southeast, Carolina Clash and Fastrak tours for Dirt Late Models.

“All of us at Cherokee are heartbroken at the passing of our friend Ginger Owens,” Gaffney’s Cherokee Speedway tweeted. “She taught us all what strength, courage, and faith looks like. We know she is in a better place and suffers no more, but we will always miss our friend. Please keep her family in your prayers.”

Her cancer battle — tabbed #GigiStrong, which was painted on the outside wall at Cherokee — received support and fundraisers from the racing community over the past year.

She’s survived by her husband Jason, a track prep specialist, along with a son, Jay, who competes in mini-stocks, and a daughter, Jaycee. Visitation is -8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at Central Baptist Church in Gaffney. The funeral is 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25 at Central Baptist. For a complete obituary, visit blakelyfuneralhome.com.
