Cherokee tabs Oct. 4 as Duvall Memorial

Gene Murphy

Oct. 4’s World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series visit to Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C., has been dubbed the Mike Duvall Memorial, honoring the first ballot National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer, officials announced today at the Cherokee County Museum. | Story

"Duvall was definitely one of the guys who put the racetrack on the map and made it into ‘The Place Your Mama Warned You About,’ So we felt like it was very fitting to have a race in his honor here," said Scott Childress, Cherokee's co-promoter. "We appreciate the Duvall family and everyone involved in putting it together. We have a plan for a very special trophy and I believe that we will have the Flintstone Flyer on display as well. We want to make this race one of our marquee events.”

WoO's second visit to Cherokee will pay $10,000-to-win on Oct. 4 with the track continuing the big weekend with local division action on Oct. 5.

The late Duvall, a World 100 winner and NDRA champion who piled up more than 700 victories over a 43-year racing career out of nearby Cowpens, S.C., was embedded in the fabric of Cherokee's historic oval. Known as the Flintstone Flyer, the black hat-wearing Duvall was a legendary racer who also operated a driving school at Cherokee for many years.
