Indee honoring late two-time champ
Two-time Independence (Iowa) Motor Speedway champion and hometown driver Greg Hunter, a 20-feature winner at Independence and among the track’s winningest drivers in the IMCA Late Model division, died July 9 at an Iowa City hospital. He was 64.
To honor Hunter, Independence promoters have scheduled a memorial race with a total purse of more than $10,500 gathered from promoters, fans, sponsors and track supporters. The winning purse is $1,777 with significant bonuses and other cash awards.
Hunter worked as an assemblyman for John Deere in Waterloo for many years and was a member of the UAW Local No. 838. He and his father Leonard Hunter Sr. were inducted into the Independence Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in 2018.
