Macon residents free for track's reopening
Macon, Ill., residents will be admitted free to May 18’s Macon Speedway racing program as new owners Kenny Brown and Eric Turner celebrate a grand reopening of the fifth-mile oval with Mayor Frank Dunmire doing the ribbon-cutting.
Brown, the founder and president of the POWRi racing organization, and Turner, a former race team owner from Kansas City, Mo., today announced they’ve finalized the facility’s purchase from Chris Kearns. No sale price was announced. The scheduled May 4 event was cancelled as the new owners transfer transition insurance coverage and other legal details.
The new owners plan to maintain the same divisions, including Crate Late Models, along with the same staff, Brown said. Starting in 2025, Brown said he’d like to add more Super Late Model specials to the schedule, including a return of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series that hasn’t run at the track since 2018.
“We want to make it a better venue, clean it up, make it look good” and “make it strong for the future to come,” said Brown, who thanked the Kearns family for their assistance in the ownership transition. “We’re excited to get it and continue to take it to the next level. Macon needs a good fresh face and that’s what we want to put on it."
May 18’s reopening event includes the track’s weekly divisions, including Crate Late Models, with Vintage Racing of Illinois cars also on the card. Macon residents and government officials will receive freed admission with proof of ID. Visit maconracing.com for more details.
