Hilsabeck suffers broken arm in wreck

heathlawsonphotos.com

BROWNSTOWN, Ind. — World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series rookie Daniel Hilsabeck of Earlham, Iowa, suffered a serious break of his left arm when it got stuck in the steering wheel during a Saturday heat race wreck at Brownstown Speedway, the team reported.

The 34-year-old Hilsabeck was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, according to series director Steve Francis. An on-site EMT said the driver was taken to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital on West 86th Street. Described as in good spirits overnight, Hilsabeck was waiting to receive word whether the break will require surgery, according to the team's Facebook page.

On the first lap of the first heat, the second-starting Hilsabeck's car ended up sideways in turn two with Jordan Weaver brushing Hilsabeck's No. 22 and an onrushing Brent Larson's car making hard contact before continuing. Hilsabeck's car coasted to the infield and a caution flag appeared followed by a red flag.

After sitting in his car for a few moments, Hilsabeck climbed out with a paramedic gingerly holding his left arm as he was guided to the ambulance. The medical helicopter departed after the conclusion of heat races.

Hilsabeck, fifth in WoO's rookie points standings, is 16th in points overall with a single top-10 finish in 10 feature starts. His best finish was eighth in a semifeature at Ultimate Motorsports Park in Elkin, N.C. — Bryan Ault
