Hummingbird closure cancels tour races

Hummingbird Speedway in Reynoldsville, Pa., today announced a premature end to the 2024 season, cancelling a pair of upcoming touring events.

The RUSH Crate Late Model tour event scheduled for Aug. 31 has been cancelled and replaced by a series event at Tri-City Raceway Park in Franklin, Pa. Also the Jay's Automotive United Late Model Series hopes to replace its lost Sept. 14 date at Hummingbird as a companion event to Sept. 13's visit to Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, N.Y. July 27's ULMS event drew the largest crowd of the season at Hummingbird.

The third-mile oval, built in 1964 but dormant from 1976-1999, has long been promoted by the Caltagarone family, who posted on Facebook the "difficult decision to cease operations for the 2024 season." Plans for a 2025 season are on hold while they "explore all options." The track plans an Oct. 20 postseason banquet with Super Late Model champion Kenny Schaffer and Semi-Late champion Doug Surra among those receiving honors.

Other weekend-announced schedule changes:

• The Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series added a $5,000-to-win event Oct. 4 at Mudlick Valley Raceway in Wallingford, Ky.

• While it's no longer an XR Super Series event, Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn., is proceeding with Sept. 19's Scorcher, a $10,000-to-win event for unsanctioned Super Late Models. See volunteerspeedway.com for details.

• The fourth annual Howie Schill Memorial, rained out Aug. 17 at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., will be moved to River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., as Sept. 5 finale for the Northern LateModel Racing Association season. The race will pay $2,404-to-win, up from the $1,992-to-win Prelude to the Johnny purse for the weeknight evente ahead of the independent John Seitz Memorial.

Mountain Motor Speedway in Isom, Ky., has cancelled Sept. 14's Ultimate Heart of America Series event, the series announced. The series hopes to find a new venue for the date.

Editor's note: Updates with RUSH event moved to Tri-City, additional Iron-Man race and details on Volunteer's Scorcher.
