Local Hall of Fame honors Armel

Greg Leedy

Retired dirt racer Buddy Armel, the winningest driver in Winchester (Va.) Speedway history, on Saturday was inducted into the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Armel and longtime basketball coach Ron Combs were inducted in the fifth class of the Hall of Fame at the annual Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast, according to a report in the Winchester Star.

Armel was a seven-time champion at Winchester, where he won 101 races while competing nearly 30 seasons and retiring in 1991, according to statistics from the newspaper. He won 202 feature races overall and twice captured the Winchester 200. He was also a five-time champion at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway.
