WVMS owners acquire Elkins Raceway

Zach Yost

The Goldvein, Va., couple that three months ago purchased West Virginia Motor Speedway in Mineral Wells today announced they have acquired 73-year-old Elkins Raceway in Kerens, W.Va.

Making plans to coordinate competition with the 5/8-mile WVMS oval 140 miles to the west of Elkins, Mike and Becky Hurley plan a comprehensive revamp of racing, clearer rules, regular technical inspections along with new concession stands and amenities at the 3/8-mile Elkins track that’s long hosted Super Late Model and Crate Late Model competition.

Comparing the track’s potential to that of Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway, Mike Hurley said he’s “thrilled about this acquisition and believe it will transform racing in the region.”

Hurley, a lifelong dirt racing enthusiast who owners and operates Xceptional Wildlife Removal, also expressed “gratitude to everyone at Elkins Raceway for their dedication in keeping the track thriving over the past 12 years. Many friendships have been forged at this venue, and we are delighted to inherit a racetrack with such a welcoming atmosphere. The level of fan engagement here is unmatched across the United States. Elkins has much to be proud of.”

The Hurleys, who plan to reopen the WVMS oval that hasn’t operated since 2023, plan to announce details for the Elkins oval soon.
