I-94 official struck by race car dies

A track official crossing the I-94 EMR Speedway surface on a four-wheeler during Wednesday’s WISSOTA 100 race program in Fergus Falls, Minn., died from injuries suffered when he was struck by a trailing street stock at the conclusion of the night’s opening heat race. The death of Scott Engfer, was reported early Thursday morning.

“All of us at WISSOTA are heartbroken and devastated by the tragic accident that claimed the life of WISSOTA board member, I-94 EMR Speedway staff member and friend Scott Engfer,” WISSOTA officials said in a statement. “We offer our sincere condolences to Deb, the Engfer family, all of Scott's friends, colleagues and acquaintances during this unimaginably difficult time as we all grieve this painful loss. Times like these remind us how precious life is.”

Life-saving measures were administered on-site and the 68-year-old Engfer was transported to the Lake Region Healthcare emergency room, according to a report from Fergus Now.

The night’s program, which included hundreds of competitors among several divisions along with the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series finale, was delayed more than two hours with the second of five days of competition resuming about 7:30 p.m.
