Muskingum plans Lucas-WoO showdown
Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series regulars are set to face off next season in a June 10 unsanctioned event at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio, tentatively paying $20,000-to-win, track promoter Tristin Moran announced Saturday at the Kubota Gateway Dirt Nationals in St. Louis, Mo.
The Shale Crescent Dirt Cup presented by Ohio Natural Energy Foundation patterns its format from the Ryder Cup, the biennial match-play golf tournament between Team USA and Team Europe.
“We’re coming up with a points structure, so each team will make points throughout the whole event, similar to the Ryder Cup,” Moran told DirtonDirt prior to Saturday’s announcement at the indoor event inside The Dome at America’s Center.” The team who has the most points at the end wins. So that’s kind of what we’re playing off of.”
The exact format and purse will be announced with promoters planning showup money for the top 10 drivers on both national tours. Bonus money will go to the winning team for the event that will stream live at FloRacing.
The midweek event at the 3/8-mile oval could potentially expand into a two-day show should the inaugural event be well supported, Moran said, but he’s “starting simple, and seeing how it goes, how the points break down from there.”
The inaugural Dirt Cup is scheduled for the Wednesday following the DIRTcar-sanctioned $100,000-to-win Dream at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, that draws most national touring regulars. It comes before an off-weekend for the Lucas Oil Series and precedes a June 12-13 WoO event at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Mineral Wells, W.Va.
