Super Late Models back at the Knob

Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex owner Rick Jones announced Monday that the Markleysburg, Pa., oval will bring Super Late Models back to its weekly racing program for the first time in several seasons while also shifting race nights to Saturday from Friday.

Jones estimates between 15-20 Super Late Model events will appear on the 3/8-mile oval's schedule, with 25-lap races paying a minimum $1,500-to-win. A complete schedule is expected to be released soon.

“We’ve run them a couple times, tried them, but it wasn’t consistent, so I think that’s why it didn’t work on my part,” said Jones, who has owned Roaring Knob since 2005. “I’ve been watching all these tracks and promoters, and it seems like everybody is dropping them. It seems like up that way there’s a lot of interest — us and Bedford (Speedway in Pennsylvania), Winchester (Speedway in Virginia), all around that area.

“They’re not running that many races and we’re hoping they would come venture to us is what we’re hoping for. Some say they will.”

Super Late Models will headline a rotating weekly undercard that includes Crate Late Models among other divisions with plans for a maximum of four divisions per race night.

Roaring Knob has also undergone a number of offseason upgrades, including the addition of approximately 150 loads of clay, a new drainage system with additional culverts to improve water management and a new intercom system.

Jones and his crew also plan to replace seating boards in the grandstands, update restrooms and add portable toilets around the property. Jones said he hopes to finalize the hiring of a new race director in the coming weeks as well.

“You’ll see a much brighter place to race this year, with all new clientele and workers,” Jones said. “I think it’s a great thing to start over.”

The track, which has focused on Crate Late Models in recent seasons, completed nine Super Late Model races in 2020 and six in 2019 and last crowned a division champion (Michael Lake) in 2017.
