Callaway Raceway owner dies at 85
Sonny Atterberry, the longtime owner of Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Mo., died April 8 at his Fulton home. He was 85.
“Sonny meant so much to the Callaway Raceway family, and his impact on this track and community will never be forgotten,” the track posted on its Facebook page, postponing the scheduled opener “out of respect for Sonny and his family, and with a few additional setbacks to include rain in the forecast that have left us unable to prepare the event the way our drivers and fans deserve.” The track's opener was rescheduled for April 17.
Atterberry’s brother Ricky, previously a co-owner of the 3/8-mile oval that was originally built in 1999, died in 2016 at the age of 60.
James "Sonny" Osroe Atterberry is survived by his wife of 65 years, Berry, along with two sons, Archie and Tim, as well as six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Find a complete obituary at maupinfuneralhome.com.
