Series suspends Crate racer two years

Greg Martin of Olive Springs, Tenn., was handed a minimum two-year suspension from all Best Plumber 604 Racing Series events following a review by officials of events he was involved in during Saturday’s tour stop at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn.

After a tangle during the feature with Matt Henderson of Lenoir City, Tenn., Martin expressed his displeasure by driving through the track’s infield and bumping into the left-rear corner of Henderson’s car as it was stopped for servicing. Video of the incident showed the contact sent two of Henderson’s crew members who were working on the right side of the car hurtling backward several feet with at least one reportedly requiring medical attention.

Martin was disqualified from further action in the race and his suspension was announced Sunday by the second-year Crate Late Model series.

Noting in its statement that “driver and crew safety is of the utmost importance to the Best Plumber 604 Racing Series,” the tour said “All participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that protects the safety of competitors, crews, officials, fans and partner tracks” and it will “continue to uphold the standards of conduct expected at all series events.”

Reports indicate that Martin was arrested following the altercation and charged with aggravated assault. The 51-year-old Martin declined comment when contacted Sunday night by DirtonDirt.

Henderson addressed the on-track tangle that preceded the infield incident in a Facebook post. He accepted responsibility for triggering the contact with Martin saying he “bottomed out and hit Greg getting into turn one three laps after a restart” and would have “understood” if Martin “wanted to fight me or tell me how unhappy he was.” But he did not agree with the contact Martin made with his car in the service area and was thankful “no one was injured far worse.”

In a message to DirtonDirt, Henderson said his crewman who was treated at a hospital suffered injuries to his ribs, some scrapes on his back and needed eight staples to close a cut on his head but was released. The other team member was “bruised and scratched and broke his glasses.”

Addison Cardwell of Knoxville, Tenn., won the season-opening Best Plumber 604 Racing Series feature. He inherited the lead on lap 13 when Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., was disqualified because series officials determined that his father, who was helping Henderson, touched Martin’s car following the infield incident.
