What won the race: Outside front-row starter Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., scored his first career Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Associaton victory Friday at Davenport Speedway, outrunning sixth-starting Tony Toste and Tony Jackson Jr. Thornton, who races out of Adel, Iowa, finished 1.691 seconds ahead of Toste to claim $3,000.
Quotable: “I could see they were kind of blowing right rears and I never felt like mine ever started chunking out real bad. One time I had a bad stumble off four and I didn’t know if it was a tire or the carburetor, so then I really started thinking," Thornton said. "I started driving a lot straighter at the end and it felt a lot better.”
Key notes: Thornton repelled early challenges from Jackson, who had a deflating tire in the closing laps. ... Spencer Diercks was running in fourth when he suffered a flat right-rear tire with six laps remaining. … Sixth-starting Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, retired during the lap-24 caution. … The Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association returned to action after nearly a month break with a weekend doubleheader in Iowa. … The weekend’s action will go from one extreme to another as drivers tackle Davenport’s quarter-mile oval on Friday before heading to the half-mile West Liberty (Iowa) Raceway on Saturday night. …
