Mark Whitener pocked $1,500 for his Winter Shootout victory.
What won the race: Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., overtook fellow Floridian and polesitter Shan Smith on the 10th lap amid traffic Friday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park and raced to a Crate Racin' USA Winter Shootout victory. Whitener, who struggled without brakes the last 10 laps, earned $1,500 in the 25-lap Sunshine Nationals opener held over from Thursday night.
Key notes: Whitener, who was sore after his rollover accident in Thursday's Super Late Model division, won by .0259 of a second over Shan Smith. ... Whitener survived a scare on the 20th lap when a slower car entering the turn-four pits held up the leaders. ... The lone caution flew on the 12th lap for Garrett Mosley's turn-two spin. ....
