Brandon Overton takes the checkered flag to win his third Dream.
What won the race: Taking the lead on a lap-92 restart from race-long leader Chris Madden, Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., led the rest of the way to win his third consecutive Dream. Overton was more than two seconds back in second when the caution waved for a three-car incident involving Devin Moran, Hudson O’Neal and Bobby Pierce on lap 91. On the restart, Overton shot around the outside leaving Madden to fend off Tim McCreadie.
Key notes: The season's richest Dirt Late Model weekend wrapped up after an 88-day weather postponement. … Eight-time dream winner Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., who was parked in the upper pit area, failed to make it to pre-race tire tech on time and was not allowed into the infield, thus forfeiting his position. He was scored 24th.
On the move: Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., started 21st and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Overton’s Wells Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Race Engine and sponsored by CrossFit Overton, E-Z-Go, Big Dog Stump & Tree, R.W. Powell Construction, Angry Elephant Tattoos & Piercings, Convenient Lube, Dirt Mafia, Allstar Performance, Penske Racing Shocks, Hoosier by Brian and Topnotch Kustom Koncepts.

From staff reports

ROSSBURG, Ohio (Sept. 7) — Chris Madden led Dream XXVIII for nearly three months. But it wasn’t long enough. A costly caution and ensuing restart helped Brandon Overton erase a two-second deficit — an advantage Madden had been protecting since regaining the lead from Hudson O’Neal on lap 18 — and carried the Evans, Ga., star to his third straight Dream victory Wednesday at Eldora Speedway.

When O’Neal, of Martinsville, Ind., and Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., were swept up in a wreck with Dresden, Ohio’s Devin Moran on lap 91, the caution proved to be the catalyst Overton desperately needed. He zipped around Madden on the outside on the restart and drove away to win his third Dream while earning a $128,000 payday.

Madden, of Gray Court, S.C., settled for second place, nearly a full second behind Overton, in an event he led from its outset way back in June 11— except for when O’Neal flashed ahead to lead lap 18. Madden had the field covered in June before rain halted the event on lap 14 and pushed its conclusion to September and appeared headed for his first Eldora crown jewel win, despite returning to the famed half-mile oval with a different car.

Ninth-starting Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., finished third while Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., rallied from 21st to fourth and Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., improved five positions to finish fifth.

“I shouldn’t have won that race. I probably had a second-place car,” said Overton. “That thing was green I felt like forever. I thought surely we’re not about to run 80 straight (caution-free) laps. And then the caution come out and I kind of had time to calm down and think. (Madden) chose the bottom ... and I really didn't think I had anything for him it seemed like we were kind of the same speed and he could get to the traffic a little better. He could keep circling a little better.

“All I was thinking was, I forgot which (race) it was I was leading and I chose the bottom (on a restart) and he flew around my ass on the top. So when he chose the bottom I was kinda grinning, but I didn’t want to jinx it. I drove it down in there (into turn one) and I knew I had him cleared, so I just let it rip. I didn’t know what I was doing, good or bad, down there or what. I knew he was gaining so I tried to dirty his air up a little bit. Sometimes stuff goes your way you know.”

Madden, who said he detected a misfire in his car’s powerplant about three-quarters through the 100-lapper, couldn’t get up to speed fast enough and watched helplessly as Overton assumed command to lead lap 92.

“We were fine as long as we didn’t have a caution,” said Madden, who has now led 123 laps without a win in four Eldora crown jewels. “As soon as we had a caution we was in trouble there. We were down a cylinder. We had a plug wire fall off right there maybe with 25 (laps) to go. We were just on seven cylinders just putt putting around. I knew when we had a restart I was a dead duck. I hate it. The best car didn’t win tonight. Thanks to all my guys. They work hard every week. I just can’t break the bad luck streak here for some reason. We had an awesome race car. We just got to get the monkey off our back here.”

Overton knew he finally had a shot once the yellow flag waved, but also knew it wouldn’t be easy.

“We had that caution and I looked at the (video score) board and it was like eight laps or something and I thought, ‘Damn I need to have the best restart of my life and just don't crash for eight laps. I knew I wasn't bad in (turns) one and two. I had kind of moved up when I was behind (Madden). He kind of got away and I moved up and I thought, ‘Man I feel really good here.’ But I struggle with still the same thing. I jumped that hump down there (entering turn three) and instead of landing and it turning, it lands and its scoots. The harder I drive it the more I go (the wrong direction) and not around the track. When there was a little bit of grip there I could kind of maintain with him … just trying to push him as hard as I could.”

Overton said that often Eldora’s large video board which displays the race in live time can assist a driver. But he said in Wednesday’s main event, he was almost too busy to look at it.

“I didn't really know where to go. I usually look at that board,” Overton said. “When you win four straight here or whatever you think, ‘Ahh you can ride around and look at that board or look behind you or whatever.’ Well when you're driving your a-- off, you can't do that. I kept telling myself to look, look and I kept forgetting. But this was my biggest concern down here in this end (in turns three and four). Even when I was behind him, that's where he was better than me, through three and four.”

Notes: The Overton-Madden finish was identical to the last Dream held at Eldora, though that was actually Dream XXVI, held two days after Overton won Dream XXVII. … Tim McCreadie has finished in the top three in two of the last three Dreams, but said he and his crew will have to go back to work in order to figure out the right tire combination is needed on his Longhorn Chassis to give him the feel he’s looking for. He seemed almost relieved to finish third on Wednesday. “We squeezed a top-five out of it, just based off experience,” McCreadie said. … Eight-time Dream winner Scott Bloomquist was scored last after he missed the pre-race tire tech. Officials would not allow the Mooresburg, Tenn., driver across the track from the upper pit area after time had expired. … After leading lap 17, O’Neal fell to sixth, where he was running when Moran shot up the track in turns one and two and collected him and Pierce. O’Neal was scored in 13th. … Only half of the 24 starters were on the track at the finish. … Along with June 11’s red flag for rain on lap 14, the race was slowed by two more cautions. Chris Ferguson of Mt. Holly, N.C., brought out the yellow on lap 15 and the final three-car caution on lap 91 set up Overton’s winning move. … Before the completion of the Dream, there were three 20-lap, $5,000-to-win Chasing the Dream features won by Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa; Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn; and Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C. To be eligible for those races, I driver could not be in the Dream XXVIII field and must not have ever won a Late Model race at Eldora.

Pre-race notes

Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., has been the Dream’s leader for 88 days. A lot has changed for Madden since rain postponed the final 86 circuits of the 100-lapper to this evening — most notably the loss of the XR1 Rocket car that the 47-year-old drove that night in June. After destroying that machine in a grinding heat-race crash on July 22 at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., Madden will head back into competition in pursuit of his first-ever Eldora crown-jewel victory piloting a Rocket car that he debuted Aug. 4 at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis., and has only tested since then. … Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., restarts second as he bids to become the first driver to win three consecutive Dreams. … Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., who sits third in the running order, celebrated his 22nd birthday just two days ago. If he’s able to join his father Don as a Dream winner he would become the event’s youngest winner, supplanting Jimmy Mars, who was 25 when he captured the race in 1997. … Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill. (running 14th) commented after hot laps that the Eldora surface “seems a little different” than it did in June. “I think it’s gonna get slicker,” he said. … As Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., sat on his four-wheeler watching the first 20-lap Chasing the Dream feature from inside turns one and two, he was asked how he had vaulted from 22nd to 12th in the 14 Dream laps run on June 11. “Damned if I know,” he quipped. The veteran and former Dream winner made some slick moves three months ago to blast away from Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga. — the Eldora Million took the green flag alongside McDowell but sits 20th in the restart lineup — but is expecting a much different racetrack. “The race usually gets real interesting with 20 to 25 (laps) to go,” he said. “Now we’ve already lost 14 laps, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.” … Josh Rice of Verona, Ky. (restarting 11th) was hoping to have his team’s bigger engine in his car tonight, but the powerplant, which was sent back to Jay Dickens’s shop in Mississippi for repairs after problems developed before last month’s North-South 100, didn’t arrive in time for him to bolt it in. The freight delivery of the motor took a circuitous route to Rice and Co.; it somehow ended up in New York before finally reaching Rice’s shop earlier today. (It’s now in Rice’s truck and his team will decide Thursday if they want to drop it in the car for the World 100 action.) … Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., went down a lap to Madden by mere inches on the last Dream lap run in June before the red flag was displayed for rain. Eldora does not use the Lucky Dog rule so he can’t get his lap back, but he plans to restart the race to use it as a test session for his Barry Wright Race Car.

9:30 p.m.: Rain is still steadily falling and most of the non-qualifiers have left the infield with their haulers; even Bobby Pierce, who is 17th in the current running order, loaded up and left the infield with his rig. The program remains under a rain delay.

Lap 14: Caution waves for rain. Race red-flagged. Earl Pearson pits. Rain falling. Madden leads Overton, O'Neal, Carson Ferguson and Tim McCreadie. Gregg Satterlee up to 10th from 16th. ... cars pulled into the pits and were covered shortly before 8 p.m.

Heat 4-6 notes

Super Late Model rookie Carson Ferguson joined his cousin Chris Ferguson as a heat winner, leading all the way to take the fourth prelim by 1.009 seconds over Brandon Sheppard. The victory gave the 22-year-old Ferguson the third starting for the Dream in his first-ever visit to Eldora. … A lap-11 caution flag in the fourth heat was a great benefit to Gregg Satterlee, who vaulted from sixth to third on the restart and held on to take the final transfer spot. … After a rain delay lasting 28 minutes, the fifth heat began with a wild backstretch tangle triggered when Mason Zeigler hooked a rut in turn two and collected several cars, including Daulton Wilson, Tyler Bruening and John Blankenship. … Jimmy Owens was in a battle for third on lap 12 of the fifth heat when his car veered to the right in turn one and smacked the outside wall. … Taking advantage of a the restart following Owens’s incident, Zack Dohm sailed past Josh Rice to regain the lead he had lost on lap five and held on to emerge victorious and secure the outside pole for the Dream finale. … Rice slipped to a third-place finish behind Zeigler, who survived his opening-lap problems in the marathon race. … Hudson O’Neal’s flag-to-flag victory in the sixth heat gave him the honor of starting the Dream from the pole position, duplicating the spot where he took the green flag in Thursday’s Million. ... Ricky Thornton Jr. and Devin Moran received the points provisionals.

Rain delay

Sprinkles of rain began to fall during the fourth heat and intensified enough after its completion to prevent the fifth prelim from rolling onto the track. The program was put under a rain delay at 5:50 p.m. with the the hope that the small cell of precipitation would pass by quickly without becoming too heavy.

Heat 1-3 notes

The polesitting Brandon Overton took an up-and-down route to victory in the first heat: falling behind Devin Moran on lap two, regaining command on lap three, slipping to third on lap four and finally rallying to grab the top spot for good from Ashton Winger on lap 11. Overton also survived a mid-race scare when he hit a rut in turn two, causing his car’s left side to bounce off the racing surface. … Moran failed to transfer, finishing fourth after losing a last-lap battle with Shannon Babb. … Michael Page was bidding for a top-five spot on lap 12 of the first heat when he spun entering turn one and collected two other cars, including Trent Ivy. An Eldora Million feature starter on Thursday, Ivey’s car had to be towed off the track. … Chris Ferguson grabbed the lead from Tyler Erb on lap two and controlled the remainder of the second heat, beating Erb by 1.909 seconds with Scott Bloomquist a bit farther behind in third to move on and chase a ninth career Dream triumph. … Million winner Jonathan Davenport was chasing Ferguson from second place on lap 12 when he scraped the outside wall through turns three and four and moments later blew a right-rear tire. He returned after a pit stop and, needing to finish at least 11th to make a B-main field, charged from 14th to finish eighth. … Chris Madden went to work quickly in the third heat, surging from third to first on the opening lap and then running away from the pack to beat Tim McCreadie by 4.828 seconds. The preliminary feature winner secured the fourth starting spot for the 100-lap headliner. … Bobby Pierce advanced from the ninth starting spot to finish third in Heat 3, completing his charge with a lap-12 slider on Chase Junghans rounding turns three and four.
