What won the race: Grabbing the lead on lap 94, fifth-starting Kyle Van Sickle of Jacksonville, Fla., led the final seven laps to win Saturday’s fifth annual Ralph Allen Showdown. Van Sickle finished 1.215 seconds ahead of Jordy Nipper to earn a $10,000 payday in the Southern Clash Late Models event.
Quotable: “I was just worried about getting tangled up in a wreck (after going to the rear of the field) honestly,” said Van Sickle. “I knew we had a good car. Had a hard tire on here. I knew Jordy had a little bit better right rear than we did for restarts and them restarts were killing me. … I knew I had a good long-run car.”
Key notes: Van Sickle had to rally from the back of the back after suffering a flat tire early. He re-entered the top-10 on lap 26 and was up to fourth on lap 34. He moved into second on lap 42. … It was Van Sickle’s third Southern Clash win of the season. He won previously on April 2 and June 3, each at Waycross. … Runner-up Jordy Nipper led laps 35-93, a race-high 59 laps. … Only eight finished the 100-lap feature. … After setting fast time during Friday’s time trails, Bo Allen of Bryceville, Fla., had an opportunity to starting the rear of the feature in the McQuaig Insurance Challenge, which would have paid him an additional $15,000 had he won. Allen finished eighth. … Jim Rogers of Statesboro, Ga., who was slated to start second, took the challenge and finished ninth after completing 81 of 100 laps. … Hunter Carter of Blackshear, Ga., finished fifth after starting 17th.
On the move: Clay Harris of Jupiter, Fla., started 14th and finished third.
