Brandon Overton and his crew enjoy victory lane at East Alabama Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Sixth-starting Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., executed an inside move on Ashton Winger for the lead on lap 40 and paced the final 14 circuits to capture Saturday's Jimmy Thomas Memorial at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Overton earned $10,053 for his second consecutive victory and his second Schaeffer's Oil Spring Nationals win of the season.
Key notes: Overton's ninth career Spring Nationals triumph was his fifth overall checkered flag of 2023. ... Hampton, Ga.'s Winger led laps 11-39 before settling for second place, 2.083 seconds behind Overton. It was Winger's second consecutive runner-up finish to Overton in the Jimmy Thomas Memorial. ... Polesitter Carson Ferguson dropped to fourth on the initial start but recovered to finish third, regaining the Spring Nationals Series points lead in the process. ... Sam Seawright led the first 10 laps before losing the spot to Winger and then spinning over the turn-two bank — nearly collecting Winger — to draw the race's first caution on lap 14. Series officials determined Seawright spun to avoid the out-of-shape lapped car Jake Rainey as he was attempting to slide past Winger and thus allowed him to retain the second position, but he faded in the closing laps and finished fourth. ... Rainey finished 10th, the first car one lap down. ... Kenny Collins and Dylan Knowles each suffered flat right rear tires on lap 51 and were unable to continue, finishing 13th and 14th. ... Ross Bailes appeared to experience terminal mechanical trouble while running fifth on lap 41, relegating him to 15th in the finishing order. ... The second-ever Spring Nationals event at EAMS was slowed by five cautions and lasted 31 minutes, with nine drivers completing all 53 laps.
On the move: Caden Mullinax of Birmingham, Ala., started 18th and finished ninth.
