Winner Robbie Emory and his supporters at Sumter Speedway.
What won the race: Pole-starting Robbie Emory of Milton, Del., led all 40 laps of Saturday's Billy Cagle Memorial at Sumter Speedway to earn $4,007 and his first Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge Series event. Emory snapped a nearly three-year losing streak.
Quotable: "It's been a heckuva two years for the team," Emory said, his voice cracking in victory lane. "I can't thank Mom and Dad enough, everybody that stuck behind us. For 10 years we (won at least one race per year) but the last two years we just hadn't been able to get it done. We always had problems. At the end of the year last year we just pulled this car and we knew we had something. It was just a matter of just getting a good combination and getting a little luck (going) our way. And it finally happened."
Key notes: Emory notched his first victory since his $2,500 payday on the defunct FUEL circuit Aug. 1, 2020, at Friendship Motor Speedway in Elkin, N.C. ... Thirteen of 24 starters completed 40 laps. ... Dustin Mitchell rallied from an early accident with Tyler Bare to finish sixth. Bare was remorseful of the incident: “I hate I got into Dustin. I thought he was going to stay down and he drifted up and I was already in the gas. He knows I don’t race that way and I don’t want to wreck a bunch of cars like that.” ... Tenth-place-finishing Matt Clanden was the highest finishing series rookie. ... Jeff Parsons finished 14th in his first trip to Sumter.
On the move: Dan Breuer of Troutman, N.C., started 17th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Emory's No. 9E is sponsored by Emory's Racing Engines, Emory's Chassisworks, JRS Competition Finishes, JD Sign, PJ1 Motorsports, Penske by JD's and Stockley Speed & Supply.
Points chase: After Sumter: 1. Derick Quade (137); 2. Robbie Emory (134); 3. Tyler Bare (127); 4. Dan Breuer (122); 5. Dustin Mitchell (121).
