Dale McDowell (17m) races past Carson Ferguson en route to his Schaeffer's Spring Nationals victory at Rome Speedway.
What won the race: After battling alongside Sam Seawright for several laps, Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., took the lead with an inside move on lap 17 and never looked back, cruising to win Saturday's $10,053 Schaeffer's Oil Spring Nationals feature at Rome Speedway. After finishing second in Friday's opener, McDowell notched his second win of the season and his 14th career Spring Nationals victory, further extending his all-time series lead.
Quotable: “The car was really good. We struggled a little bit early, the car just didn’t feel good and so finally in the feature on long runs, it was better,” McDowell said. “It was still a little bit tight, but definitely way better and I could run traffic, maneuver pretty good, so it was a good night for our E-Z-Go hotrod, so we sure appreciate it."
Key notes: Seawright, of Rainsville, Ala., led laps two through 16 before being overtaken by McDowell and settled for the runner-up position, 3.763 seconds back. ... Austin Horton battled Seawright in the closing laps, finishing third. ... Michael Page and Ross Bailes each advanced two positions, finishing fourth and fifth. … Tyler Millwood gained three spots and finished seventh. ... Carson Ferguson led the first lap and battled with McDowell and Seawright before suffering a flat right rear tire and drawing the race's final caution on lap 33; Ferguson recovered to finish 10th after changing the flat. ... Benji Hicks pitted from seventh with a flat left rear tire and rebounded to finish 12th. ... Cla Knight pulled off after completing only two laps and Payton Freeman scratched for the night after failing to finish his heat race. ... Saturday’s feature, the first Spring Nationals race at Rome since 2021 and the sixth-ever series stop there, was slowed by four cautions and lasted 31 minutes, with 12 competitors completing all 53 laps.
On the move: Will Roland of Jasper, Ga., started 12th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: McDowell’s Shane McDowell Racing Team Zero Race Car has a Clements Chevrolet engine and sponsorship from E-Z-Go, Cometic Gaskets, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Connected Strategy Advisors, Northeastern Fabrication, Fox Racing Shox, Campbell Insulation Specialists, Shackleford Enterprises and Spring-Pro.
